When my best canine friend, a beautiful yellow lab I'd had since she was a pup, started showing dog arthritis symptoms, I was in denial of what was happening. Being considered an elderly dog, I certainly expected her to slow down a bit, as naturally occur during the aging process. But I wasn't prepared to accept the fact that perhaps she was suffering from arthritic pain that wasn't going to go away.

Dogs have a wonderful way of hiding discomfort, so when she started showing the tell-tale symptoms, I knew she must have been extremely uncomfortable all along, as I denied the signs of arthritis. Always one to jump in the water, even puddles, she now showed little interest in any movement that allowed a lot of effort. In fact, she lay on her bed more often than usual. She used to be the type to jump up at the first sound of the treat jar opening, but now she preferred having her snack hand delivered to her on her doggie bed.

Before dog arthritis symptoms set in and I began giving her liquid glucosamine, she was so energetic I often complained, because she was notorious for knocking things over, running to the door within seconds of the doorbell ringing - even the sound of the UPS truck, whether stopping at our home or not, was cause for a high speed dash across the living room. But then I began noticing that these events took place and, if she got up at all, it was at a much slower speed.

Taking her for daily walks was another sign that dog arthritis symptoms were setting in. I used to joke that I felt she was walking me, when I'd hook up her leash and take her around the neighborhood. But now the leash had slack, because it was evident she was slowing down her pace. The event that showed me it was time for a trip to the vet was when my little nephew came to visit. The vet said there are prescriptions available, too, but we haven't needed those to date. I've learned a lot through this painful process, and at times I feel bad that I didn't notice the dog arthritis symptoms sooner. When the dog responds when you go to all fours, you praise and reward him. Now, your first thought may be to make use of the term “Down” with this but if you have already tried on the extender as the command for “lay down” then you will need to pick another word. Dog Breeds, Size and Weight

An intelligent dog. It has an excellent temperament. It was used as a hunting dog in times gone by so it is quite tough by nature.

Beagle
Friendly, clever and not too big, making them suitable as a family dog. They can be over energetic if not exercised. They respond well to firm training.

Cairn Terrier
Busy little dogs that adapt well to children. They are usually of good quiet temperament

Collie
The Collie and the smaller Shetland are both calm, gentle and tolerant breeds that usually do well with children. They do need some constructive play i.e. fetching a ball etc.

German Shepherd
Very intelligent but it is a big dog and needs exercise and constructive play. It is loyal and a good guard dog. However, a German Shepherd must be properly trained.

Cross-Bred Dogs

Puppies do not have fully developed blood-replacing systems in the body, therefore hookworms in puppies can prove to be fatal.

Dog tapeworms produce a typical behavior. Dogs tend to drag their rear end along the ground as if trying to find relief from irritation. Whipworms usually do not produce any visible discomfort or behavior that is atypical, but foul, tar-like diarrhea is one of the signs that your pet may have whipworms.

Heartworms are not a common occurrence in dogs in cold climates, but their presence cannot be ruled out altogether. Heartworms live in the heart and the adjoining blood vessels. The symptoms are similar those that you would associate with heart disease, such as the inability to tolerate exercise and fluid retention in the abdomen.

Canine and feline parasites can be highly problematic. Roundworms and tapeworms can block intestinal passages by sheer numbers. Hookworms can totally drain energy by denying the host dog of all the benefits of a healthy diet. The encouraging part is that most worms are easy to cure by a simple de-worming course.
